Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis captured his first title of 2009 with a straight set victory over Belgium’s Olivier Rochus.
Olivier Rochus gave Marcos Baghdatis a run for it in the second set, but in the end, the Cypriot was too strong.
The first set featured complete domination from Baghdatis. Rochus had not a single chance to break Baghdatis, but he faced 5 break points on his own serve. The Cypriot was able to convert on two of them for the easy 6-1 victory.
The second set was far more competitive, but if featured a string of service breaks, including 2 from Baghdatis. Both men were serving under 60% and thus easy prey for a decent return game. Baghdatis got the match-winning break at the tail-end of the second set.
The win puts Baghdatis well on his way to an impressive comeback. Just a few months ago, the Cypriot was languishing outside the top 100. Prior to this week, he sat at 66 in the world, but he will pocket 250 points from this victory.
